Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: how about a killer West LA Fadeaway?

I've gotten a lot fonder of West LA since hanging around in this place. Always loved the hypnotic funky hook, but it's just an example for me of getting stopped by the lyrics ... maybe the only one, even. I had the same reaction to it as Disco Dancin: the Dead getting out of their mythic zone and moving into a very modern and hard-edged place that's a lot like, well, my image of L.A.!!! The opposite of SF in feeling/esthetics ... so the whole imagery gets caught up for me in disco and a bunch of people in Go To Heaven leisure suits and it just always threw me.

Of course if it had pre-existed when I got into the band I assume I'd have grandfathered it in, as I mentally did pretty much everything else ... but it didn't, so it was a "new song" that was sort of the Dead going L.A. ...

Not saying that's fair, it was just my reaction. Anyway I deal with that better now, so yeah, this is a great version :-)
